Statement

Date: March 30, 2007
Location: Lincoln, NE
Issues: Death Penalty

Gov. Dave Heineman and Attorney General Jon Bruning released the following statements regarding the Judiciary Committee's discussion today on LB 377.

Gov. Heineman said, "I am adamantly opposed to the repeal of the death penalty. In its current form LB 377 is a back door attempt to repeal the death penalty in Nebraska. My support for the death penalty has been very clear and I am opposed to its repeal, in whatever form it may take. If this bill reaches my desk, I will veto it."

Attorney General Bruning said, "Let me be clear - I support the death penalty. I believe it is an effective deterrent and an appropriate punishment for the worst of the worst. I'm confident the people on death row deserve to be there. This proposal is no compromise. It will end the death penalty in Nebraska."
